Introduction of Applied Mathematics for Senior Secondary Level from the academic year 2020-21

As  we all know from the academic year 2019-2020, the CBSE introduced two levels of Mathematics, i.e., Basic and Standard. Likewise the CBSE has introduced two levels of Mathematics for classes 11th and 12th. The first one is the usual Core Mathematics (041) and the second one is Applied Mathematics (241) which is quite easier one.

The Board has introduced the concept of Applied Mathematics with the view to help the students of Arts and Commerce streams who want to study Maths. Erstwhile Applied Maths was included among the skill elective subjects but from the academic year 2020-21 it becomes an academic elective subject. The syllabus of this Maths will be relevant only to their stream so that those students can study only that is useful for their careers and not teh whole deep Mathematics. The Core Mathematics is useful for the Science students who seek their careers in Maths specific fields such as Engineering


Eligibility

All those students who opted Standard Mathematics in class 10th CBSE 2020 are eligible for opting both Applied and Core Mathematics in the Intermediate from any of the three streams. On the other hand those students who opted Basic Mathematics can take only Applied Mathematics. This is to help the students with Basic Mathematics to opt Maths for higher studies. 

Which one is good for Science students (PCM)?

In my opinion most of the Science students take PCM with the view to seek their career in Maths specific field so it would be better if they opt Core Mathematics but again only those who have take Standard Mathematics in Matriculation. But the final decision solely depends upon you which path you want to choose based upon your pros and cons.
 

Which one is good for Commerce students?

As most of the students choose Commerce with the view to seek their careers which require knowledge of just general Maths and not so deep knowledge about such Chartered Accountancy. So, Applied Mathematics would be enough for them. But again if you have taken Standard Mathematics in class 10th you are free to opt Core Mathematics either.
